The town of St. George's is about 5 mi (8.0 km) north of the airport and is the capital of the island nation of Grenada. The airport is located on Point Salines, the most southwestern point of the island. It is named after former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop (1944–1983), who championed the construction project in 1979.

It is a quasi-co-operative formed by farmers to safeguard and promote the interest of the Nutmeg Industry and to help farmers develop and market their produce locally, regionally and internationally. Presently the GCNA has an active membership of approximately 3,500 farmers. The GCNA employed over 138 employees with its principal Head Office located at Kirani James Boulevard, St. George's. 85% of Grenada’s bulk nutmegs and mace are exported to Europe, Asia, Canada and South America, India, Argentina and the Caribbean.
